What to Expect in the Foster Parent Licensing Process

Thank you for your interest in becoming a foster parent! Below is an overview of the licensing process, the steps involved, and our goal for your journey with us.

Let's start the conversation.

  • Connect with our team to learn more about fostering.
  • Ask questions and share information about your family.
  • Attend an orientation to receive an overview of the licensing process and requirements.
1–2 weeksFrom initial contact to orientation completion.

Apply & Learn

Apply today. Prepare for tomorrow.

  • Complete the application and required paperwork.
  • Participate in state-required pre-service training.
  • Learn what to expect during the foster care journey.
3–4 weeksTraining is typically completed over several sessions.

Prepare Your Home

We'll help you get ready.

  • Gather the required documents.
  • Complete necessary home safety preparations.
  • Receive guidance and a checklist to help you complete each requirement.
2–3 weeksPrepare at your own pace while training is in progress.

Home Study

Getting to know you and your home.

  • A licensing social worker will complete your home study.
  • The process includes interviews, home visits, safety checks, and a review of your background and references.
3–4 weeksScheduling varies based on availability and family needs.

Background Checks & Clearances

Safety is our priority.

  • All adults in the home must complete fingerprinting and background checks.
  • Required clearances must be completed before licensure can be approved.
2–3 weeksThis step may occur during the home study process.

Welcome to the AFCA Family

You're ready to make a difference.

  • Your social worker will review all completed information and make a recommendation.
  • The licensing team will complete a final visit.
  • Once approved, you will receive your foster care license.
  • Ongoing training and support will continue after placement.
1–2 weeksFrom final review to the licensing decision.

Most families are licensed in approximately three months.

Some timelines may extend to approximately four months depending on state processing times, scheduling, and individual circumstances.
